Additional Notebook Know-How: Strategies for the Writer's Notebook Information

A writer's notebook is an essential springboard for the pieces that will later be crafted in writers' workshop. It is here that students brainstorm topics, play with leads and endings, tweak a new revision strategy, or test out a genre for the first time.

In Notebook Know-How, Aimee Buckner provides the tools teachers need to make writers' notebooks an integral part of their writing programs. She also addresses many of the questions teachers ask when they start using notebooks with their students, including: How do I launch the notebook? What mini-lessons can be used throughout the year to help students become more skilled in keeping notebooks? How do I help students who are stuck in writing ruts with notebooks? How do I help students use their learning from notebooks for other writing? How do I organize notebooks so that the design is flexible, yet still allows students to access information easily? How can writers' notebooks help students become better readers? How do I assess notebooks?

This compact guide is packed with lessons, tips, and samples of student writing to help teachers make the most of writers' notebooks, without sacrificing time needed for the rest of the literacy curriculum. In fact, Notebook Know-How shows how smart and focused use of writers' notebooks enhances and deepens literacy learning in both reading and writing for students in grades 3–8.

What Customers Say About Notebook Know-How: Strategies for the Writer's Notebook:

You don't have to read the entire book at once to start the lessons. I have tried all of these lessons within my own classroom and my students loved the activities. If you are an experienced teacher or new teacher implementing Writing Workshop in your classroom each day, this is a MUST HAVE book. Each section gives great ideas. Her new book, NOTEBOOK CONNECTIONS just came out and is also AWESOME.A great summer read. You can tell that the author, Aimee Buckner, is an authentic writing teacher still in the classroom just like all teachers. Her book is VERY reader friendly.

It will transform your teaching. It will give you a great way to get your student's writing like "crazy." Don't miss out on this one. Her writing lessons are engaging, purposeful, and concise.Cindy ColemanWriting Teacher3-7 grades This is a wonderful book for anyone who is teaching writing at any age. Buckner's approach is teacher friendly and makes sense.

I bought this along with A Writer's Notebook by Ralph Fletcher, and I liked this book more for helping me teach. Provides great background information and explanation for using the notebook and lesson ideas. Yet, it's still easy to go straight to the lesson ideas without reading the rest of that other stuff.

One of the most helpful books on the subject I have seen. There is also a very helpful chapter on assessing the notebook. I have been using writer's notebooks with my students for years and always struggled with integrating them into the entire language arts curriculum. This book has several hands on strategies which illustrate ways to use the students' own writing to teach a variety of writing skills.

I highly recommend this book if you are a first time writing teacher, or a novice writing teacher. This book was a quick and easy read that easliy lent itself to great lesson plans for the whole school year.
